About Adolph Ochs
Adolph S. Ochs, a prominent newspaper publisher in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, was the former owner of The New York Times and The Chattanooga Times (now the Chattanooga Times Free Press). After buying the New York Times in 1896, he revived it and introduced his own stringent editorial standards to the paper and the American journalism industry in general.
His Childhood
His parents were German immigrants who moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1865 following the end of the American Civil War (1861-1865).
While still in school, he delivered newspapers, and in 1872, he started working as an apprentice printer for the Knoxville Chronicle.
The Chattanooga Times & Other Publishing Ventures
He contributed to the founding of the Chattanooga Dispatch in 1877, and in July 1878 he borrowed $250 to purchase a majority stake in the failing Chattanooga Times. Again using borrowed money ($75,000), he took over the struggling New York Times on August 18, 1896.
He probably saved The New York Times by reducing its price from three cents to one cent in 1898 when sales were low. He started publishing The New York Times Index, the only comprehensive U.S. newspaper index, in 1913 to provide the general public with reliable sources.
Personal Life
He exchanged wedding vows with Effie Wise in 1884.
