About Allen Collins
Larkin Allen Collins Jr., professionally known as Allen Collins, was an incredibly talented 20th-century American musician and composer best known for his association with the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” band “Lynyrd Skynyrd”.
Background & Early Life
The musician was born in Jacksonville, Florida. Collins developed an interest in music and instruments at a very early age and by 12, he had learned the guitar with supervision from his mother. He was educated at Nathan B. Forrest High School.
The “Lynyrd Skynyrd” band
He joined the “Lynyrd Skynyrd” band as a guitarist nearly two weeks after its formation in 1964. However, the band began to earn national prominence in 1973. He co-wrote many of the band’s greatest hit songs, including “Free Bird”, “That Smell” and “Gimme Three Steps”.
Accident & Other bands
Unfortunately, on October 20, 1977, an aircraft carrying the “Lynyrd Skynyrd” band crashed into a bush in Mississippi, killing three members, Steve, Cassie and Van Zant. However, Collins suffered a severe injury but he recovered after several years. Unfortunately, the accident led to the band’s abrupt end until they officially reunited in 1987.
Aside from “Lynyrd Skynyrd”, he also released albums with the “‘Allen Collins Band” and the “Rossington Collins Band”.
Death
Sadly, on January 23, 1990, he died at age 37 from chronic pneumonia.
