About Andre Harrell
Andre Harrell was an American music executive as well as a former rapper who is best known as one of the pioneers of the entire rap-music industry. In addition to founding the legendary Uptown Records, he also briefly served as the CEO of the popular record label, Motown Records as well as formerly being one half of the old school rap duo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde.
Family Life
His parents’ first names are Bernie and Hattie. His son, Gianni Credle-Harrell, was born in 1994 to an attorney named Wendy Credle.
Achievements
Harrell formed the successful hip-hop duo Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde, alongside Alonzo Brown, in 1981. And for the record, he was the Dr. Jeckyll of the group.
A couple of years later he began working under Russell Simmons as the general manager and vice president of Def Jam Records.
In 1986, Harrell founded his own label, Uptown Records. This is the company which published the music of famous 20th century acts such as Heavy D & The Boyz, Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Lost Boyz and the Notorious B.I.G.
From 1995 to 1997 he served as the Chief Executive Officer of Motown Records.
After leaving Motown he then founded and ran another label called Harrell Records. And in the years that followed, he remained active in the music industry in varying capacities.
Trivia
Although he’s had a troubled relationship with Sean “Diddy” Combs, he is recognized as the one who helped Combs learn the inner workings of the music industry.
He went to college for a few years but left early to pursue a media career.
Harrell appeared, as Dr. Jeckyll, in the classic hip-hop movie “Krush Groove” (1985).
