About Andreas Hofer
He was a Tyrolen freedom fighter who was revered as a national hero. He led the rebels of Tyrol in the famous Bergisel Battles.
Early Life
Born in Passeier, Germany, Hofer managed his father’s inn after his death. He was also a merchant of cattle and wine. He befriended Archduke Johann, a field marshal and imperial regent.
Notable Facts
After Tyrol came under Bavarian rule in 1805, Andreas Hofer helped work towards its return to Austria. During the Bergisel Battles, he led the Tyrolean troops against the Bavarian forces and Napoleon I's forces. Following the defeat of his men, he fled to the Pfandler Alp in the Val Passiria valley. Later, he was betrayed by a fellow countryman which led to his arrest by French forces. In February 1810, he was executed by a firing squad of the military court.
Legacy
The Austrian Emperor gave his family a patent of nobility in 1818. German writer, Luise Mühlbach detailed events in his life in his novel “Andreas Hofer.”
