About Antonio Margarito
Antonio Margarito is a celebrated Mexican-American retired boxer who has been considered as one of the greatest welterweight fighters of his era. He made his professional debut in 1993 at age 15 when he fought and defeated Jose Trujillo.
After winning a number of bouts, he had his first world title fight in 2001 against Daniel Santos. The competition was cancelled due to an accident. The following year, he defeated Mexican boxer Antonio Díaz to clinch the WBO Welterweight belt. He held the title for five years before surrounding it to Paul Williams.
Before his first retirement in 2012, he won titles from other governing bodies including the International Boxing Federation, and the World Boxing Association. He also fought against some prominent names like Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, and Manny Pacquiao.
Personal Life
As a child, he attended boxing gyms with his brother. His first marriage to Michelle ended in 1999. He later tied the knot with a woman named Lorena.
Trivia
After four years away from the sport, Margarito returned to the boxing ring in 2016.
He won 41 of his 50 professional fights. Twenty-seven of his wins came by way of knockouts.
He’s also known by the nickname "The Tijuana Tornado (El Tornado de Tijuana)”
