In 2019, Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty won the French Open title, her career's first Grand Slam single title. She occupied the top spot in the women's tennis world rankings following the victory.
Career
Barty started playing tennis in Brisbane at four years old. She was the second tennis player from Australia to hold the top singles ranking in the world in 2011. In 2013 at 16 years old, Barty enjoyed early doubles success on the WTA Tour, placing second at three Grand Slam doubles competitions. She made admirable shots and was an excellent server. She decided to stop playing tennis toward the end of the 2014 campaign.
She received a request to join the Australian national women's cricket squad during her break. She showed promise and made the decision to continue. Barty returned to tennis in early 2016.
In January 2022, Barty entered the Australian Open, winning every set and defeated American Danielle Collins in the championship match.
Awards
She has served as the National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador for Tennis Australia.
At the 2022 Queen's Birthday Honours, she was named an Officer of the Order of Australia for her immense contribution to the sport.
