About Astrid Lindgren
Astrid Lindgren pursued a career as a secretary and journalist before making her debut as an author in 1944. A fiction and screenplay writer, she is best remembered for her children’s book series about characters such as Pippi Longstocking (her most popular amongst the lot), Karlsson-on-the-Roof and Emil of Lonneberga. She served on the Stockholm-based book publishing company, Raben & Sjorgren’s Children’s Literature Editorial Board. Outside of writing books, she was known for her advocacy of children’s rights.
Family Life
Her parents were Hanna Jonsson and Samuel August Ericsson. She has three siblings. At 18 years old, she got pregnant with her first child, a son named Lars – His father was a chief editor of a local newspaper she worked for. Her second child, Karin was from her marriage to Sture Lindgren.
Achievements
She was the winner of a Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1958. She earned a Right Livelihood Award in 1994.
Death
She died on January 228, 2002 at 90 years old.
