About Banastre Tarleton
In 1775, Banastre Tarleton joined the British army as a member of the 1st Dragoon Guards. Later that year, when the historic American War of Independence broke out, he sailed to North America to help in the battle.
The following year, he joined the core of the British Army and participated in the Battle of Sullivan's Island. Before the year came to an end, he had been promoted to the brigade major position. In 1778, he was elevated to the position of a captain. He was later put in charge of the British Legion which was formed that same year in New York.
Political career
After serving in the wars in America, Tarleton returned to Great Britain to start his political career. In 1781, he was voted into the UK's Parliament to represent the people of Liverpool. He spent most of his political career as a member of the Whigs.
Family
He was the son of John Tarleton, a prominent British merchant. He had six siblings including John Tarleton, who was also a politician. The army officer was married to Susan Bertie.
Education
He was a graduate of the University College, Oxford.
Medals
During his time in the army, he earned many laurels including the Baronet and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.
Trivia
After the death of his dad, he received £5,000 which he squandered on women and gambling.
He forced General Charles Lee to surrender in 1776.
