About Betty Everett
Soul singer Betty Everett started performing as a gospel singer and pianist in church when she was nine years old. At 17 (in 1957), she moved to Chicago, Illinois, hoping to get a start in secular music. She finally landed a recording deal with Vee-Jay Records six years later. Her first single with the label was a commercial failure.
She came to prominence through her 1964 single, “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)”. She is also known for the song, “Let It Be Me”, which she sang as a duet with Jerry Butler.
Family Life
Everett was raised in Greenwood, Mississippi. In Chicago, she lived with her elder sister. She had a daughter from her failed marriage.
Achievements
She was honoured by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation with a Pioneer Award in 1996.
Death
She died on 19 August 2001 from natural causes.
