About Billy McFarland
William Z. McFarland, popularly known as Billy McFarland, got on the wrong side of the law when in 2017, he was slapped with multiple lawsuits for fraud. McFarland, who was the CEO of Fyre Media Inc., had sold expensive tickets to his Fyre Festival, originally scheduled for April 2017, promising attendees of luxury hotels and meals, performances and special celebrity guest appearances. In the end, the festival was cancelled on the day attendees started arriving, leaving them stranded.
Personal Life
He was brought up in Millburn, New Jersey, by his real estate developer parents. He dropped out of his computer engineering studies at Bucknell University even before he finished his first year. He founded Spling, an advertising website after he left college, followed by the card-based membership club, Magnises.
Conviction of Fraud
Besides selling tickets to Fyre Festival attendees and cancelling the show, he was also charged for using fake documents to overvalue his company in order to lure investors as well as selling fraudulent Met Gala, Coachella and Burning Man attendance tickets. He was handed a six-year prison sentence in October 2018.
