About Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson
Bjornstjere Bjorston, who won the 1903 Nobel Prize for literature, was a poet, playwright, journalist, and theatrical director. The Norwegian writer was one of the most notable public figures of his time. He was known as one of "the four great ones" of 19th-century Norwegian writing, along with the likes of Henrik Ibsen, Alexander Kielland, and Jonas Lie.
Early Life
Heltberg Latin School in Christiania was where the writer had his formative education. He enrolled at the University of Oslo and began his journalism career, specializing in theater criticism in the early 1850s. He fathered six children with his partner Karoline Reimers.
Career
He released "Synnøve Solbakken" (1857) and "Fiskerjentene" (The Fisher Girls) (1868) followed shortly. A theater production of Leonarda (1879) sparked a violent debate. He sided with Ivar Aasen in the 1860s and 1870s political conflicts. He fled to Germany for a period before returning after being accused of high treason.
