Charles I of England was King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1625 to 1649, when he was executed. He believed in the divine right of kings and he governed according to his conscience. Many of his subjects opposed his policies.
His Personal Life
He was the son of James VI of Scotland and I of England and Anne of Denmark. He was married to Henrietta Maria of France and he fathered 9 children.
In 1649, he was accused of treason against England by using his power to pursue his personal interests rather than the good of his country. He was executed at the age of 48. His last words were "I shall go from a corruptible to an incorruptible Crown, where no disturbance can be". The executioner was masked.
