About Colin Chapman
Colin Chapman was one of the most respected individuals in the automobile industry during the 1950s. He was globally known as the originator of English automotive firm Lotus Cars. He also made a name for himself in the Formula One series, winning the Constructors' title seven times with Team Lotus.
He began his adventures in 1948 when he designed his first car known as Lotus Mark I. Chapman has been credited for popularizing the use of monocoque chassis in the construction of automobile racing cars. The English engineer has been considered as one of the most influential people in the F1 series.
Family
He was the son of the former manager of The Railway Hotel at Tottenham Lane. This celebrity was married to a lady called Hazel, and together they had three kids including Clive Chapman who would become the manager of Classic Team Lotus.
Education
After his education at Stationers' Company's School, Chapman enrolled at the University College London where he read structural engineering. He later moved to the University of London Air Squadron.
Recognitions
In 1997, he became a member of the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Three years before that, he was selected into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was also made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and was named the 'Young Businessman of the Year' by The Guardian in 1970.
Trivia
His association with John DeLorean made him unpopular during the 1970s and 1980s.
He also worked with many top names in the automobile industry including Keith Duckworth and Mike Costin.
