About Curtis LeMay
Curtis Emerson LeMay was a U.S. Air Force general. He is best remembered for using his expertise to implement the highly controversial but strategic and effective bombing techniques in the Pacific theatre during World War II.
Early life & Education
He lived in Columbus, Ohio, during childhood.
He is an old student of Columbus South High School. LeMay holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ohio State University.
In late 1929, the Air Corps Reserve commissioned him as a second lieutenant. The following year he was privileged to receive a regular commission in the United States Air Corps. Between 1931 and 1932, he was on a flight-training program at Norton Field, Columbus.
U.S. Air Force & World War II
In 1942, he became the commander of the Air Corps’ bombardment group. After he flew from England with the 8th Air Force (from 1942 - 44), his reputation for bomb tactics grew. He helped the U.S. develop the famous combat box formation. He commanded the B-29 combat operations against India, China, and finally Japan in 1945.
LeMay’s operations with B-29 led to massive and devastating attacks on over 60 Japanese cities during World War II. This operation was also responsible for the famous Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, which led to Japan’s eventual surrender in 1945.
