About Djuna Barnes
Djuna Barnes was a 19th-century author, journalist and illustrator from America. She was popularly known for her work titled “Nightwood” which was published in 1936. Although Barnes never had formal education in her childhood days, her works became very popular, especially in New York. In 1913, she made her journalism and illustration career debut at the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. The following year, she rose to prominence. Barnes published works include “The Book of Repulsive Women” in 1915, “A Night Among the Horses” in 1929, “Ladies Almanack” in 1928, “The Antiphon” in 1958 and “Ryder” in 1928.
Education
She studied at the Pratt Institute and the Art Students League of New York.
Family
She was born to Henry Aaron Budington (Wald Barnes) and Elizabeth J. Chappell. She had five biological siblings and three half-siblings including Thurn, Zendon, Muriel, Duane and Sheila. She married twice. Her first marriage to Percy Faulkner lasted only two months, then to Courtenay Lemon (from 1917 to 1919).

Barnes was honored in 1981 by the National Endowment for the Arts with a senior fellowship.
