About Douglas Houghton Campbell
American professor Douglas Houghton Campbell was known as a plant morphologist and one of the founding professors of Stanford University.
Early Life
Campbell was born to James V. Campbell and lived out most of his early life in Detroit. He enrolled and graduated from Detroit High School in 1878 before proceeding to graduate from the University of Michigan with a major in botany. He received his master's degree in 1882 and his Ph.D. 4 years later.
Career
The botanist became one of the few scientists to embed plant material in paraffin to make fine cross-sections. He also pioneered the study of microscopic specimens using vital stains. From 1888 to 1891, he worked as a professor at Indiana University. He and some of his colleagues set up the Botany Department at Stanford University in 1891.
In 1895, the scientist wrote what was perhaps his most popular article "The Structure and Development of Mosses and Ferns", which gave a precise description of various mosses and ferns species.
Trivia
Campbell became the president of the Botanical Society of America in 1913 and later joined the National Academy of Sciences in 1910.
