About Edgar Mitchell
Edgar Dean Mitchell was a former US Navy officer and aviator, and a famous NASA astronaut. He went on several successful NASA missions and was the sixth man to walk on the Moon. He was also an International Space Hall of Famer.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Hereford, Texas. He held a BSc degree in Industrial Management, a BSc degree in aeronautical engineering and a doctorate in Astronautics and Aeronautics from Carnegie Institute of Technology, US Naval Postgraduate School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
NASA Career
In 1966, he was selected by NASA as an astronaut. He served on the Apollo 9 support crew and served on Apollo 10 as a lunar module pilot. During Apollo 13, he was part of the team that worked in the “Lunar Module Simulator” at “Johnson Space Center”, developing techniques that would help bring home the crew of the crippled spacecraft.
He was Apollo 14’s lunar module pilot. He assisted in collecting 43kg of lunar rock and soil samples, which were delivered for study to 187 research teams in the USA and 14 other countries.
Death
He died in his sleep at age 85 on 4 February 2016.
