About Eero Saarinen
Born to an exceptional and famous architect, Eero Saarinen grew up with more than enough inspiration to pursue a career in the same field. In fact, he got his first job post-architecture studies at his father’s firm Saarinen, Swanson and Associates in 1936. He first came to prominence in 1940 for his design of the Tulip chair which was built by Knoll, Inc. He is remembered best as the designer behind iconic buildings and monuments such as the Gateway Arch, the Washington Dulles International Airport, the TWA Flight Center and General Motors Technical Center.
Family Life
His father was the Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen. His mother’s name was Louise. He was raised in Finland until the age of 13, when his family moved to the United States. He was married to American sculptor Lilian Swan from 1939 to 1954. In 1954, he married art and architecture critic Aline Bernstein. He had three children, one of whom (Eric Saarinen) became a cinematographer.
Achievements
He was a recipient of the American Institute of Architects’ gold medal.
Death
He died during a brain tumor surgery on September 1, 1961.
