Emir Kusturica is a French-Serbian actor, filmmaker, lecturer, and musician. He is best known for directing many internationally acclaimed films.
Background & Early Life
He is a native of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. At age 17, His father’s connections with movie director Hajrudin “Šiba” Krvavac helped Emir land a role in the 1972 partisan movie “Walter Defends Sarajevo.”
In 1978, he graduated from FAMU, a film school in Prague’s Academy of Performing Arts. Emir started to direct short TV films after his graduation.
Cinematic Career
Kusturica has made numerous cameo appearances. However, his first prominent acting role came in 2000 when he played “Saint Pierre” in “The Widow of St. Pierre.” He also starred as “KGB, Colonel Gregoriev” in the 2009 French film “L’affaire Farewell.” Kusturica has also won several awards as an actor and director in his cinematic career.
Achievements
As of 2021, he had been nominated five times at the “Cannes Film Festival.” He won the Best Director prize with his film “Time of the Gypsies” and two Palme d’Or awards with “Underground” and “When Father Was Away on Business.” In addition, his films “Arizona dream” and “Black Cat, White Cat” earned him Silver Bear and Silver Lion awards. He has also been appointed as Commander of the “Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.”
