About Ethel Waters
Gospel Music Hall of Famer Ethel Waters attracted lots of admirers with her numerous Broadway performances. Widely regarded as one of the greatest jazz singers of all-time, Waters scored a number of hit songs such as "Supper Time" and "I'm Coming Virginia". She was a very prominent entertainer during the Harlem Renaissance.
Acting career
Seen as a complete entertainer, Waters also appeared on many television, film and stage productions. She began making a name for herself in the industry after starring in the 1934 film “Gift of Gab”. Other notable films that she appeared in included “Cabin in the Sky” and “Carib Gold”.
Family
She was born to John Waters and his wife Louise Anderson. Her first marriage to Merritt Purnsley ended in 1913. After divorcing Clyde E. Matthews in 1933, she became the wife of Edward Mallory. Singer Crystal Waters is her great-niece.
Achievements
In 2007, she was posthumously elected into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. She was also shortlisted for a number of awards including the Academy Award, and the Primetime Emmy Award. Three of her songs, "Am I Blue?", "Dinah" and "Stormy Weather" have been selected into the famous Grammy Hall of Fame.
Trivia
She was the first African-American female artiste to earn a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.
Waters goes into the history books as the first black-American to feature in her own TV program, and the second to receive an Academy Award nomination.
