About Floyd Collins
Floyd Collins developed an interest in visiting caves at an early age. He was very popular during the Cave War period in the 20th Century. In 1917, while spending some time on his dad’s farmland in Kentucky, he discovered the Crystal Cave which he would commercialize into a tourist center.
Due to the location of the cave, it recorded low visitors hence his decision to open the Sand Cave which was closer to the roadside. He became one of the most popular cave owners in Kentucky during the early 20th Century.
Family
He was one of the children of Martha Jane Burnett and Leonidas Collins. The American explorer had seven other siblings.
Cause of Death
Collins was trapped in the Sand Cave in 1925. He died of hunger and thirst.

The first cave he discovered was called Donkey's Cave.
At age six, he entered a cave for the first time.
He inspired Tina Landau and Adam Guettel’s musical titled “Floyd Collins”.
