Frederick W. Smith served in the military with the U.S. Marine Corps from 1966 to 1969 and went into business the year after his discharge. His first business venture was buying shares of Ark Aviation Sales, an aircraft maintenance firm which he rebranded to become a used jets trading company. He is known best for his roles as the founder and the CEO of FedEx, the popular multinational holding firm.
Family Life
His father, James Frederick Smith founded the restaurant chain known as Toddle House. He was brought up by his mother and uncles following the loss of his father at the age of four. He is the father of 10 children, including American football coach Arthur Smith, photographer Windland Smith Rice and film producer Molly Smith.
Achievements
He is an inductee of the SMEI Sales & Marketing Hall of Fame. His other accolades include the Bower Award and the Golden Plate Award.
Trivia
From 2003 to 2021, he was a minority shareholder of the Washington Redskins team.
