About George Tucker
Best known for writing and directing one of Goldwyn Pictures’ box office hits, “Miracle Man”, American filmmaker George Tucker earned prominence in the early 1900s when films started becoming popular escapist entertainments.
Marriage
While in London, he met actress Elizabeth Risdon, whom he married in the mid-1910s.
Education and Early Career
Tucker was an alumnus of the University of Chicago and had worked in the railroads as chief clerk and later as contracting freight agent.
Some of his earliest credits include the 1911 “Their First Misunderstanding” and the “Traffic in Souls” in 1913. The latter starred Ethel Grandin, Matt Moore and Jane Gail.
Major Productions
The London Film production put Tucker on their team as director-general where he produced and directed the film adaptation of the novel “The Manxman” in 1917, among others. On return to the States, he wrote and directed Goldwyn’s bestselling 1916 film “The Cinderella Man”, which starred Mae Marsh and Alec B. Francis.
Death
His last film, “Ladies Must Live”, premiered some four months after his death in 1921. The filmmaker had succumbed to an illness that he was battling for about a year. He was 49 years old.
