About Gerald Durrell
Gerald Durrell was a renowned British naturalist who in 1959 founded the famous Jersey Zoo. Four years later, he established the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, a charity organization whose primary aim is to prevent the total wipe out of animal species. He also embarked on many expeditions to countries like Cameroon, New Zealand and Australia.
During his active days, Durrell published over thirty books which made him one of the most popular naturalists of his generation. His first book entitled “The Overloaded Ark” was published in 1953. “My Family and Other Animals”, a book he launched in 1956, is considered as his most popular work.
Family
He was one of the children of Lawrence Samuel Durrell and Louisa Florence Dixie. He was the brother of British writer Lawrence Durrell. His 1951 marriage to Jacquie Wolfenden ended in 1979. He later married American naturalist Lee Wilson.
Education
Durrell studied at Wickwood School.
Honors
In 1982, he was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. He also received the Netherlands’ Order of the Golden Ark.
Trivia
He was one of the founders of the World Cultural Council.
In 2006, the Gerald Durrell Society was established by Wildlife Preservation Canada.
His books “The Durrells” and “My Family and Other Animals” were later adapted into TV series.
