Gerhard Schröder
During the 1970s and 80s, Gerhard Schröder worked as a lawyer and was famously known for defending Horst Mahler, one of the founders of the Red Army Faction group. He started his political career in 1963 when he became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He was made a leader of the party’s Young Socialists group in 1978 before he was elected into the Bundestag two years later.
In 1990, he was elected as the Prime Minister of the Lower Saxony state. He also served as the President of the Bundesrat, and the head of SDP before he was voted as Germany’s Chancellor in 1998. His most notable achievement during his seven-year tenure was initiating the Nord Stream gas pipelines.
Other businesses
Outside politics, Schröder is also known to be a very hardworking business executive. In 2017, he was appointed the chairman of Rosneft, an energy company in Russia. He has also held high positions in organizations such as Rothschild, and Hannover 96 soccer club.
Family
He’s the son of Wehrmacht officer Fritz Schröder and his wife Erika Vosseler. In 2018, he married his fifth wife Kim So-Yeon, a South Korean business executive. His previous wives were Doris Köpf and Eva Schubach.
Education
He’s a product of the University of Göttingen.
Decorations
Schröder has been decorated with many laurels including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Order of the White Lion (Czech Republic).
Trivia
Due to his association with Vladimir Putin, he was accused of siding with the Russians during the country’s attack on Ukraine in 2022.
