About Gil Hodges
The former American baseball player dedicated a chunk of his sports career playing for the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers. He was the NL record holder for career Grand Slams for seventeen years.
Early Life
Born in Princeton, Indiana, he studied at Petersburg High School where he joined the athletics team. Aspiring to be a coach, he continued on to Saint Joseph’s College.
Career Highlights
In 1943, aged 19, he made his first major league appearance with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In less than 2 weeks, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, and during this period, participated in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II. He later earned the Bronze Star for heroism for his brave contributions. Honorably discharged a year later, he joined the Newport News Dodgers until he was recalled to Brooklyn in 1947.
Major Honor
He was inducted into the New York Mets Hall of Fame.
