About Haing S. Ngor
Haing S. Ngor was a top gynecologist and obstetrician. The Cambodian-American was also an actor and author. He shot to mainstream fame following his portrayal of Dith Pran, the real-life Cambodian journalist and refugee, in the 1984 film, “The Killing Fields”. Having been forced to conceal his skills as an OB/GYN during the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia, he eventually escaped to the United States in 1980. He had no prior acting experience when he accepted the role of Dith Pran. He later appeared in films such as “In Love and War”, “Ambition” and “Hit Me”. He published a book, “Haing Ngor: A Cambodian Odyssey” in 1988.
Family Life
Despite being an OB/GYN, he could not save his dying wife (Chang My-Huoy) and baby, who required a caesarean section to survive due to fear of being killed by the Khmer Rouge.
Achievements
He was the first actor of Asian ancestry to win an Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actor". He was also the recipient of a Golden Globe Award and two BAFTA Awards.
Death
He was murdered during a robbery in front of his home on February 25, 1996.
