About Hans-Ulrich Rudel
Hans-Ulrich Rudel had his pilot training in 1941 and was assigned to the Sturzkampfgeschwader 2 during the Second World War. He was part of the team that attacked Marat, a Soviet battleship later that year. In 1944, he was elevated to the Oberstleutnant position and was made the head of the SG 2.
Throughout his service, the German pilot recorded more than 50 aerial victories through which he destroyed over 800 vehicles including 70 landing craft, and 519 tanks. He also flew 2,400 combat missions.
After surrendering to the U.S. in 1941, he fled to Argentina. He came back to his native country and contested in the West German election in 1953, but was unsuccessful. He later migrated to Paraguay.
Family
His dad, Johannes Rudel, was a Lutheran minister. He had two other siblings. He had two children from his first marriage to a lady called Ursula. He later married Ursula Daemisch with whom he had a child called Christoph.
Honors
He became the most decorated army officer in Germany after the War. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds. His other decorations included Wehrmacht Long Service Award, and Honor Goblet of the Luftwaffe.
Trivia
While in Paraguay, he represented many German companies in the country.
