About Helen Sharman
Helen Sharman's accomplishments include being the first British person to travel to space, an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, an astronaut chemist, and an author.
Career
She was chosen and trained at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut training center in Russia after replying to radio commercials seeking astronauts to take part in space missions. On May 18, 1991, she made her first space flight aboard the Soyuz TM-12 spacecraft along with two Soviet cosmonauts as a research cosmonaut.
Along with doing agricultural and medical experiments, she used the radio to speak with schoolchildren. On May 26, she boarded the Soyuz TM-11 back to earth.
Early Life
The British cosmonaut and author attended Jordanthorpe Comprehensive before graduating from the University of Sheffield with a BSc in chemistry in 1984 and a PhD from Birkbeck, University of London. She worked as a research and development technician for General Electric Company in London.
