Biography
He was born in Hamburg and attended the Hamburger Konservatorium to study composition and classical violin. He was drafted into the German Army at the age of 19 and stationed in Crete with the Music Corps. He spent three years as a prisoner of war in Belgrade, Yugoslavia.
After World War II, he went on to serve as the musical director of the Belgrade Radio Orchestra. He held that position until 1952, when he departed Yugoslavia.
Collaboration with Bert Kaempfert
He met musician and songwriter Bert Kaempfert while working as a composer, arranger, and violinist with radio orchestras after returning to Germany. Early in the 1960s, the two started co-writing songs when their relationship developed into a musical partnership. They wrote several hit songs together, including "Lady," and "Sweet Maria," which went on to be covered by artists including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Al Martino.
With his own orchestra, he released three albums. He triumphed in the 1972 competition for the anthem for the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich.
Personal Life
He married Ruth Wellstein. In 1972, he lost his battle to cancer. The German composer was 57 years old at the time of his death.
