About Howard Webb
Before announcing his retirement in 2014, Howard Melton Webb established himself as one of the respectable soccer referees in the sport’s history. Throughout his career, which spanned for over 20 years, Webb officiated a number of high-profile matches including both the FIFA World Cup, and Champions League finals in 2010.
He started his career in 1989 when he began refereeing in the local leagues. The Football League appointed him as an assistant referee in 1996. He performed remarkably well before being named as a center referee two years later.
Family
He’s the son of Billy and Sylvia Webb. His dad also worked as a referee. He married German referee, Bibiana Steinhaus in 2021. He had three children with his first wife whom he divorced in 2016.
Honors
In 2011, he was named as a Member of the Order of the British Empire.
Fun Facts
Before starting his work as a soccer official, he worked as a police officer. In 2008, he was granted a 5-year break from the service to focus on his refereeing.
Throughout his career, he issued a total of 68 red cards and 1,694 yellow cards.
He’s known to be a fan of Rotherham United.
