About Ibn Taymiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah was an Islamic scholar whose thoughts and beliefs were said to be the foundation of the Salafi-Jihadism religious-political ideology. Known to be a controversial figure, Taymiyyah started teaching Hadith in 1284 as the head of Sukkariyya.
A student of the famous Hanbali School, he became popular for his participation in the Battle of Marj al-Saffar. He was also praised for his influence on other well-known figures such as Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and Ghazan Khan, the ruler of Ilkhanid. His decision to allow jihad against some Islamic groups has been criticized by some scholars of recent times.
Family
He was the son of Shihab al-Din Abd al-Halim ibn Taymiyyah, and the grandson of Abu al-Barkat Majd ad-Din ibn Taymiyyah al-Hanbali.
Education
He studied at Madrasa Dar al-Hadith as-Sukariya and was taught by Ali ibn `Abd al-Qawi al-Tufi, and Sibawayhi.
Trivia
He memorized the Qur'an when he was a teenager.
In 1326, he was sent to prison for his comments against visiting Muhammad's grave.
