Career Highlights and Achievements
The year 2003 saw him appear for his ATP debut in Bucharest where he scored a 7-5, 6-7, 6-0 win against Nikolay Davydenko. In April 2005, he debuted at his ATP singles title in Valencia and defeated David Ferrer. Two years later, he beat world champion Andy Roddick and several others and qualified for his first Grand Slam quarter final. His prolific performances earned him a place in the quarter finals of Buenos Aires, Miami, Monte Carlo and Dubai. Several injuries shortened his tennis career and ushered in an early retirement in 2011.
As a player, the Russian won the Davis Cup in 2006. As captain, he led his side to the Fed Cup title in 2020/21.
Personal Life
He was romantically involved with fellow professional player Maria Kirilenko, but they broke up in 2011.
