About Ilya Repin
Regarded as one of the best Russian painters of the nineteenth century, Ilya Repin made his first painting when he was sixteen years old. He was praised for his eye-catching paintings of some renowned artistic and literary figures such as Leo Tolstoi, and Modest Mussorgsky. Some of his most popular works were titled “Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks” and “Barge Haulers on the Volga”. Until 1905, he worked as a teacher at the famous Academy of Fine Arts.

He was born to a Russian Army officer named Yefim Vasilyevich Repin and his wife Tatiana Stepanovna Repina. He had a daughter called Vera.
Education
After failing to gain admission to study at Saint Petersburg’s Imperial Academy of Fine Arts at his first try, Repin finally had the chance to become a student of the school in 1864.
Trivia
His friendship with Leo Tolstoi earned him lots of admirers.
He was criticized for his 1885 work of Ivan the Terrible.
He was also a citizen of Finland.
