About Islam Karimov
Islam Karimov, born Islam Abduganiyevich Karimov, is an imminent figure in the political history of Uzbekistan. He was the Head of State of the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic from 1989 until 1991. He declared the independence of the country in August 1991.
Background & Education
He was of Tajik and Jewish descent. However, he was born in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. He enrolled at the Tashkent State Technical University in 1956 and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree in 1960. He earned his master’s degree in Economics in 1967 from the Tashkent State University of Economics.
Political Career
Between 1966 and 1986, he served at various ranks on Uzbek’s State Planning Committee. In 1989, he became the first secretary of the “Communist Party of Uzbekistan.”
On March 24, 1990, he reached the peak of his political career after Uzbek’s Supreme Soviet elected him as its first president of the republic. Then after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, he was elected as the president of Uzbekistan. He was president until he died in 2016 and won Uzbekistan’s 2015, 2007 and 2000 presidential elections with over 90% of the total votes in each election.
Death
He died at age 78 on September 2, 2016, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, after suffering multiple organ failures and cardiac arrest.
