Belle & Sebastian
Campbell met Stuart Murdoch, a Scottish musician and filmmaker, at a New Year's Eve party at the age of nineteen. The duo played roles in a production session with Stuart David sponsored by Stow College's Music Business Administration curriculum. They formed Belle & Sebastian in 1996, the name Belle & Sebastian was formed from a children's book of the same title.
Campbell played cello, percussion and sang backing vocals, while Murdoch was the lead singer on the first two albums, she similarly was the lead singer on a few songs from the band, and wrote the hit UK single "Legal Man", featuring Sarah Martin and Rozanne Suarez on vocals.
The band followed up with the album “The Boy with the Arab Strap" which featured the track "Is It Wicked Not to Care?" Another album was released in 2000, titled “Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant “, featuring songs such as “Family Tree” and “Beyond the Sunrise”. Campbell is a singer on "Family Tree", and performs a duet with Stevie Jackson on the latter. Other songs on the album include “Nice Day for a Sulk” and “There’s Too Much Love”. The singer parted with the band in 2002, after eight years of doing music together.
Other Career Highlights
In 1998, she collaborated with rock group Snow Patrol as a vocalist on their song “NYC” for the album “Songs for Polarbears”.
In 1999, Campbell’s solo album, titled “The Green Fields of Foreverland”, was released by Jeepster Records, using the same label “Belle & Sebastian” as Gentle Waves. She released a second album “Swansong for You” in 2000. Campbelle later collaborated with Mark Lanegan and released an EP titled “Time Is Just The Same” in 2004. They later released the albums “Ballard of the Broken Seas” and “Sunday at Devil Dirt”.
