About Ivan III of Russia
Grand Duke of Muscovy Ivan III Vasilyevich, aka Ivan the Great, was the first to use the title "Grand Duke of all the Russias." He is known as the "gatherer of the Russian lands" credited with quadrupling the size of his state's territory, proclaiming Moscow to be a third of Rome, constructing the Moscow Kremlin, and establishing Russian autocracy. He holds the record for the longest reign as a ruler of Russia, having ruled from 1462 to 1505.
Background
In a botched coup d'état his father lost his sight. He wed the duchess of Tver at a young age in exchange for assistance and safety.
He seized control from his father and waged war against both foreign and domestic rival states in an effort to unite Russia as a single nation and establish it as a political power in Europe.
The Mongol or Tatar yoke, was rejected by Muscovy under his rule. In 1480, he declined to give the Grand Akhmat Khan the customary tribute.
He adopted the double-headed eagle, a Byzantine emblem, as Russia's coat of arms in 1497 and agreed to Sofia's request that Italian architects rebuild Moscow. In 1497, he ordered the creation of the Sudebnik code of law.
