About James Ewing
James Ewing’s passion for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer made him one of the disease’s most prolific researchers of the first half of the 20th century.
In 1899, the American pathologist became Cornell University’s first clinical pathology professor. He is known best for discovering Ewing sarcoma, a type of cancer that affects bones or soft tissue.
He is credited with being instrumental in the establishments of the American Association for Cancer Research and American Cancer Society.
Personal Life
For two years, from the age of 14, he was bedridden due to osteomyelitis. He was an alumnus of Amherst College and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York.
Death
He died on 16 May 1943 aged 76.
Trivia
His book, “Neoplastic Diseases: A Text-Book on Tumours”, was a breakthrough in modern oncology.
