About Jane Pierce
Jane Pierce was the first lady and the wife of the 14th president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, who governed the country from 1853 to 1857.
Family Life and Education
She was born as Jane Appleton to Reverend Jesse Appleton and Elizabeth Means-Appleton.
She tied the wedding knot with Franklin Pierce in 1834 and they both had three sons.
First Lady of the United States
Although she was married to a politician, Jane Pierce hated politics and this created some tension with her husband.
Jane Pierce became the First Lady of the United States after her husband won the 1852 general elections. Sadly, a few days before the swearing-in ceremony, she lost her child to a train accident and because of that, she wasn’t present at the ceremony.
Pierce did not actually perform any roles as every First Lady should do for almost 2 years until in 1855, when she made her first Lady appearance during a New Year’s Day Reception.
Death
The US First Lady died of Tuberculosis in 1863.
