About Jim Abbott
Born James Anthony Abbott and famously called Jim Abbott is a retired American professional baseball player. Abbott was probably the most famous and celebrated sportsman with a major disability during his era. The player was born without his right hand but managed to play ten seasons in the Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1989 and 1999.
Early Life & Education
He was born in Flint, Michigan. He played amateur baseball for the Ypsilanti, Michigan, American Legion team. Abbott attended Flint Central High School, Michigan, where he excelled as a pitcher and quarterback.
In 1985, he refused to sign to the Toronto Blue Jays when they drafted him in round 36 during the Major League draft. The player then studied at the University of Michigan. He led Michigan to two championship titles, and in 1987, became the first baseball player to win the “James E. Sullivan Award” as the best amateur athlete in the USA.
MLB Career
In his ten-year career in the (MLB), he played for the California Angels (1989–1992), New York Yankees (1993–1994), Chicago White Sox (1995), California Angels (1995–1996), Chicago White Sox (1998), and Milwaukee Brewers (1999).
In 1987 and 1992, he won the “Golden Spikes Award” and “Tony Conigliaro Award,” respectively. In addition, he was inducted into the Baseball Reliquary’s Shrine of the Eternals in 2003.
