About Jimmy Nelson
Jimmy Nelson was one of the first American ventriloquists to have a successful career. With the help of his dummy, Farfel, the performer was best known for appearing in commercials.
Early Life
Nelson was born on Christmas Day in Chicago, Illinois in 1928. On his tenth birthday, he received a ventriloquist dummy called Dummy Dan from his aunt. He started practicing ventriloquism; and soon, he was entertaining his friends and family.
Career
In 1945, Nelson replaced Dummy Dan with a more customized dummy and renamed him Danny O’Day. Two years later, Nelson’s career was on the ascendancy. His appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” catapulted him to even greater fame. He released two records called “Pinocchio” and “Jokes and Riddles.” Nelson also hosted numerous TV shows, including “Come Closer” and “Bank on the Stars.” He appeared in the ventriloquist documentary called “I’m No Dummy” in 2009.
Later Years
After retiring, Nelson worked in advertising and public relations. He died in 2019 after suffering a stroke. The performer was survived by his second wife, Betty and their three children. Nelson had twins from a previous marriage.
