About Johannes Rau
German-born politician Johannes Rau served as the leader of his country from 1999 to 2004. Prior to securing the highest position in his country, Rau served as the president of the German Bundesrat on two occasions: from 1982 to 1983 and from 1994 to 1995.
Early Life
Rau lived out most of his life in Germany and came from a highly religious family. Even though school was very important in the household, young Rau thought it best to leave school at a tender age and work with the Protestant Youth Publishing House in 1949.
Career in Politics
Life with the religious organization gave Rau a lot of insight about the country and its economical struggles. On the back of that, he joined the All-German People's Party in 1952 until it was dissolved in 1957. Rau later joined forces with his mentor, German politician Gustav Heinemann, and joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany. He later went on to become the Mayor of Wuppertal from 1969 to 1970 and then went on to become President of the German Bundesrat from 1982 to 1983 and 1994 to 1995.
Rau was later called to take the office of Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia from 1978 to 1998. He later attained the most envious position as President of Germany from 1999 to 2004.
Personal Life
The former German leader was married to Christina Rau from 1982 to 2006. He died in 2006 and was survived by 3 children.
