About John D. Rockefeller
The Standard Oil Company, which rose to dominate the oil industry and became one of the first significant trusts in the United States, was founded and developed by American business magnate and philanthropist John Davison Rockefeller. He was known for establishing several foundations and contributing a total of more than half a billion USD in his lifetime to charitable causes. This feat of his makes him one of the first significant philanthropists in the U.S.
Background
Rockefeller started his first company, a commission-based business dealing in commodities, after attending Cleveland's Central High School, dropping out, taking one business class at Folsom Mercantile College, and working as a bookkeeper in the late 1850s.
Becoming an oil tycoon
By securing a stake in a Cleveland refinery, he joined the burgeoning oil business around 1863. His control over it allowed him to significantly influence the railroad industry, responsible for transporting his oil across the nation. The first infamous business trust in the US was Standard Oil.
The breaking of Standard Oil
Standard Oil had to be dismantled as a result of breaking many federal antitrust laws, according to a 1911 Supreme Court decision. Chevron Corporation, and other profitable businesses were among the 34 entities that were divided.
Philanthropy
He was active in philanthropy for years, donating his fortune to organizations that supported churches, healthcare, and education.
Spouse and Children
The business tycoon married Laura Spelman in 1864. His wife was the daughter of a very wealthy American businessman and politician. By Laura, he fathered five children, including Elizabeth, Edith and John.
