Jonathan Woodgate is a very familiar face in modern English soccer. He is a retired English soccer player whose best position was at center back. He had a career that spanned from 1998 to 2016.
He is also a professional soccer coach and manager.
Soccer Career
He began his soccer career at Middlesbrough and joined Leeds United at age 16. He went on to make over 100 appearances for the team.
In 2003, he was transferred to Newcastle United for about £9 million. His performances at Newcastle attracted Spanish soccer giants Real Madrid to sign him for £13.4 million in the 2004 transfer window. However, he only managed 14 appearances for Madrid due to injuries and even missed the entire 2004-2005 season.
From 2006 to 2016, he played for various English clubs, including Middlesbrough, Tottenham Hotspur, and Stoke City. He had eight caps for the England national team in his international career.
Woodgate retired from playing soccer in May 2012, at age 36.
Coaching Career
Following retirement, he took up a series of coaching jobs at Middlesbrough, and in June 2019, he earned the job as a first-team coach. He managed the club until his dismissal a year later.
He was appointed as manager of AFC Bournemouth on February 21, 2021. However, after failing to qualify them for the Premier League, he left in June 2021.
