About Karol Szymanowski
Karol Maciej Szymanowski was one of most renowned Polish composers of the early 20th century, having received awards such as the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta and the Republic of Poland's Order of Merit.
Background
He enrolled in the State Conservatory in Warsaw while growing up as a member of the affluent landowner gentry class. From 1926 until his retirement in 1930, he served as the institution's director.
He formed the Young Polish Composers' Publishing Company in Berlin (1905–12). He wrote two song cycles, “The Love Songs of Hafiz”, and the opera "Hagith" in Vienna (1911–1914).
In 1918, he completed the two-volume novel "Efebos," which deals with homosexuality.
Death
He passed away at a Grasse sanitarium while receiving treatment after a protracted fight with tuberculosis on March 29, 1937
Honors
The author was posthumously given the Order of the White Eagle in 2018.
