About Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum
A descendant of the House of Maktoum, Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum became the Princess of Dubai in 2006 after her dad Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was enthroned as the ruler of the city.
Escape from Dubai and arrest
Latifa became the subject of many media discussions in 2018 when she, alongside Tiina Jauhiainen, a Finnish friend, departed Dubai to Oman. She later left Oman with the help of Hervé Jaubert, a French Navy officer. The team were however intercepted at Goa by Indian officials.
Later that year, it was reported that the “Nostromo”, the yacht in which the princess and her team were traveling in, had disappeared. This led to a huge rescue mission by both the Indian and Emirati governments.
In December 2018, news broke that Latifa was back in the city but was held hostage by her father. For her freedom, the #FreeLatifa campaign started gathering momentum on the internet. After three years, Latifa was spotted at many public places, which gave the impression that she had been freed.
