About Lawrence Wackett
Wackett was best recognized as an air force officer, an aero nautical engineer and a pioneer of the aircraft industry. “Wing Commander Wackett,” as he was affectionately called, also served as a professor at the University of Minnesota.
Early Life
Wackett studied at the Duntroon Military Academy.
Career & Other Notable Facts
During World War 1, he served in Palestine and Europe. This period witnessed his valor and innovative spirit that earned him the rank of mayor. In the early 1920’s, he designed the Widgeon I and II flying-boat and the Warragal I and II landplanes. In World War 2, he designed the Wirraway fighter and oversaw the manufacturing of over 700 units of the airplane.
In honor of his contributions to aviation, a trainer for the Empire Air Training Scheme was designed and named after Wackett.
Recognition
Lawrence Wackett was a recipient of the Oswald Watt Gold Medal.
