About Leó Szilárd
Hungarian-born American physicist Leó Szilárd gained global recognition in 1933 when he first hypothesized the “nuclear chain reaction” concept. The following year, he patented the main information for the “nuclear fission reactor”.
Szilárd also played a key role in the famous Manhattan Project after writing the letter which led to the commencement of the project. The letter was signed by famous physicist Albert Einstein.
Family
He was the son of Tekla Vidor and Lajos Spitz. His two siblings were called Rózsi and Béla. In 1951, he tied the knot with Getrud Weiss. Before that, he was in a relationship with Gerda Philipsborn, an opera singer.
Education
Szilárd studied at institutions like Humboldt University, Budapest Technical University and Technical University of Berlin.
Awards
In 1960, he was awarded the Albert Einstein Award. A year before that, he received the Atoms for Peace Award.
Trivia
At the age of 18 years, he received a national award in mathematics.
He was a member of the physicist group called ‘The Martians’.
