About Ludwig Erhard
Ludwig Wilhelm Erhard, the winner of the Bavarian Order of Merit, was a German-born politician who belonged to the Christian Democratic Union. He was widely known for his profound ability to lead the Western German postwar economic reforms and bring about economic recovery in the war-ravaged country.
Early Life
Erhard was born to Wilhelm and Augusta Erhard. He lived with his 3 other siblings in Bavaria. He graduated from Fürth's Royal Bavarian Vocational High School in 1913. He later went on to college in 1919 to study Business administration. In his mid-20s, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Frankfurt.
Career
Erhard first became an executive in his father's company in 1925. After World War II (WWII), he became an economic consultant and was elected to be the director of economics in 1948.
Erhard was appointed Federal Minister for Economic Affairs from 1949 to 1963. Also, he served as the vice-Chancellor of Germany from 1957 to 1963. 1966 saw the politician become the leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) while being the Chancellor of Germany from 1963 to 1966.
Death
Erhard died in 1977, aged 80. The cause of death was a heart failure.
Trivia
Erhard served in the Bavarian army and rose to the rank of Unteroffizier (i.e. a junior non-commissioned officer) from 1916 to 1919 in WWI and the Western Front battles.
