American horticulturist and botanist Luther Burbank is considered by many as one of the fathers of agricultural science in the United States.
Background
Luther Burbank was born on a farm in Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was the thirteenth of fifteen children. After high school, he developed a fascination with his mother’s plants raised in their garden.
He lost his father at 21 years old and used the fortune bequeathed to him to buy a 17-acre ranch in Massachusetts, where he began plant breeding. He developed the legendary ‘Burbank potato’ and later sold the rights to this invention.
His Methods and Notable Accomplishments
Burbank used a variety of strategies in his work, despite his lack of record-keeping. He used methods like grafting and hybridization in his investigations. He experimented with breeding various plant species together and came up with the most intriguing results.
His best-known creations include the "July Elberta" Peach, the Shasta daisy, and the fire poppy. He developed the "Flaming Gold" nectarine variety and the freestone peach.
Over the course of 55 years in the industry, Burbank created more than 800 plant breeds and kinds. He created several types of fruit, grains, flowers, vegetables, and grass.
He provided money to neighborhood schools due to strong interests in education.
